Signs of Degenerative Disc Disease

Degenerative Disc Disease (also known as DDD) is a condition that affects the spinal discs, causing them to lose their natural ability to absorb shock and provide cushioning between the vertebrae. This can lead to pain and discomfort, and may even result in nerve damage. If left untreated, DDD can cause significant disability and impact a person’s quality of life. Learn some of the most common signs and symptoms of degenerative disc disease.

  1. Back Pain
One of the most common symptoms of degenerative disc disease is back pain, which can be mild or severe and ranges from a dull ache to a sharp, stabbing sensation. The pain might be concentrated in one area of the back or more widespread and can increase with activity.
  2. Numbness and Tingling
As DDD progresses, it can cause nerve damage, leading to numbness and tingling in the arms, hands, legs, or feet. This is because the nerves that travel through the spinal column can become compressed or pinched by the degenerating discs.
  3. Weakness
As nerve damage worsens, it can cause weakness in the muscles of the arms or legs. This can make it difficult to perform everyday tasks like walking or lifting objects.
  4. Reduced Range of Motion
Degenerative disc disease can also limit the range of motion in the affected area. This can make it difficult to bend, twist, or turn without pain.
  5. Stiffness
Stiffness is another common symptom. The affected area may feel stiff or sore, making it difficult to move or perform daily activities.
  6. Radiating Pain
Pain may diffuse from the affected area to other areas of the body. For example, a person with DDD in the lumbar spine may feel pain that radiates down the leg, a condition known as sciatica.
